Description

The WOODWARD 5466-1035 is a member of the FlexGen™ family of digital generator set controllers—advanced, microprocessor-based devices engineered for precise speed (governor) and load control of prime movers such as diesel engines, gas turbines, steam turbines, and reciprocating engines driving synchronous generators. Designed for both standalone (island) and utility-parallel operation, the 5466-1035 delivers robust performance in critical power applications including data centers, hospitals, oil & gas facilities, and microgrids.

This controller integrates governing logic, synchronizing capability, and kW/kVAR load sharing into a single compact unit. It supports multiple operating modes:

  • ISOCH (isochronous)for frequency stability in islanded systems,

  • DROOPfor stable parallel operation with other generators or the grid,

  • Pre-actand compensation algorithms for fast transient response during large load steps.

The WOODWARD 5466-1035 communicates via Modbus RTU (RS-485) and optional Modbus TCP (Ethernet), enabling integration with building management systems (BMS), SCADA, or higher-level energy management platforms. Its ruggedized design meets IEEE 421.5 standards for excitation and speed control systems and is suitable for harsh industrial environments with high EMI, temperature extremes, and mechanical vibration.

Configuration and diagnostics are performed using WOODWARD ToolKit™ software, which provides intuitive setup wizards, real-time trending, alarm logs, and firmware updates over USB or serial interface.

Main Features and Advantages

Integrated synchronizing & load sharing:
Unlike basic governors, the 5466-1035 can automatically close the generator breaker when voltage, frequency, and phase angle match the bus—eliminating the need for external synch check relays. In multi-unit plants, it coordinates kW/kVAR sharing via CAN or analog load share lines.

Fast transient response:
Advanced control algorithms minimize speed droop during sudden load changes (e.g., motor starts), maintaining voltage and frequency within ±1%—critical for sensitive IT loads or process equipment.

Cyber-secure and future-ready:
While supporting legacy Modbus, the platform is designed for secure remote access (with proper network segmentation). Firmware updates via ToolKit ensure compatibility with evolving grid code requirements.

Proven reliability in mission-critical sites:
Deployed globally in Tier III/IV data centers and offshore platforms, the 5466-1035 has demonstrated >99.99% availability in continuous-duty applications.

Application Field

  • Emergency & Standby Power Systems: Hospitals, airports, telecom facilities.
