The WOODWARD 5466-316 is a compact, cost-effective digital speed controller from the FlexGen™ family, designed for small to medium-sized generator sets powered by diesel or gas engines. It provides precise engine speed (frequency) regulation, basic load management, and essential engine/generator protection—making it ideal for standby, prime power, or simple parallel applications where full-featured synchronizing is not required.
Unlike higher-end models (e.g., 5466-1050), the 5466-316 focuses on core governing functionality without built-in auto-synchronizing or complex kW/kVAR sharing. However, it fully supports both ISOCH (isochronous) mode for stable frequency in islanded operation and DROOP mode for basic parallel running with other droop-controlled units or the utility grid.
The controller accepts a magnetic pickup (MPU) signal from the engine flywheel to measure actual speed and compares it to the setpoint. Using a high-performance PID algorithm, it outputs a 4–20 mA or PWM signal to the engine actuator (e.g., electronic fuel rack, gas valve) to maintain speed within tight tolerances—even during sudden load changes.
